Red Jamaican Cherry, scientifically known as Muntingia calabura, is a fast-growing tropical fruit tree prized for its small red fruits with a very sweet, cotton-candy–like flavor. This highly productive tree is easy to grow and well adapted to warm climates, making it an excellent choice for home gardens, edible landscapes, and tropical orchards.

The tree begins producing fruit at a young age and can fruit multiple times throughout the year in warm conditions. Its delicate white flowers attract pollinators, followed by clusters of sweet, soft-textured cherries enjoyed fresh or by wildlife.

Growing Conditions

Red Jamaican Cherry thrives in tropical and subtropical climates and performs exceptionally well in Florida and similar regions.

  • Sun: Full sun for best growth and fruit production

  • Water: Moderate watering; drought tolerant once established

  • Soil: Well-draining soil; adapts to sandy or poor soils

  • Temperature: Prefers warm weather; protect from frost when young

  • Spacing: Allow room for canopy growth if planted in ground

Growth Habit

This tree grows quickly and can reach medium height if planted in the ground, but it also responds well to pruning, allowing it to be kept smaller for backyard gardens or container growing. Regular pruning helps maintain shape and encourages new growth and fruiting.

Fruiting

  • Fruits can appear within 1–2 years of planting

  • Produces continuously in warm climates

  • Small red fruits with a soft texture and very sweet taste

  • Excellent for fresh eating and attracting birds
