Experience one of the finest gourmet table grapes of the South with our live Darlene Muscadine Grape vine (Vitis rotundifolia). Developed as a premier patent-bred selection, ‘Darlene’ is famous for producing mammoth, globe-shaped berries—often the size of a quarter to a half-dollar—that ripen to a beautiful warm bronze with a rosy pink blush.
Unlike standard thick-skinned muscadines, Darlene grapes feature a remarkably tender, edible skin and a juicy, melting pulp bursting with an ultra-sweet, fruity aroma (reaching up to 22% sugar content). Naturally heat-tolerant and disease-resistant, this vigorous climbing vine thrives in warm, humid climates where traditional European bunch grapes struggle. Our young vines are well-established in 1-gallon nursery containers with strong root systems, ready to train onto a trellis, arbor, or fence.
Features
– Gourmet extra-large fruit: Produces huge, 1.25-inch bronze-pink berries with exceptional 22% sugar sweetness.
– Heat & humidity champion: Naturally resistant to pests and diseases common in warm subtropical and southern gardens.
– Container size: 1 Gallon.
– Fresh eating favorite: Ideal for eating fresh off the vine, fruit platters, homemade preserves, and sweet juices.
How to Care & Grow
1. Sunlight: Plant in full sun (at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily) for maximum fruit production and sugar development.
2. Soil & Planting: Thrives in fertile, sandy loam or well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH (5.5–6.5). Space vines 15 to 20 feet apart along a sturdy trellis, wire system, or pergola.
3. Pollination Note: ‘Darlene’ is a female-flowered variety and requires a self-fertile muscadine vine (such as ‘Carlos’, ‘Cowart’, ‘Ison’, or ‘Noble’) planted within 50 feet for fruit set.
4. Watering & Pruning: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish deep roots. Prune annually during late winter dormancy to maintain fruiting spurs and an open canopy.
