Grow your own gourmet vanilla right at home with our live Vanilla Orchid plant (Vanilla planifolia). Native to tropical forests of the Americas, this extraordinary climbing orchid is prized both for its lush, ornamental foliage and as the true botanical source of natural vanilla pods.

The plant develops thick, fleshy, deep-green stems and glossy oblong leaves, using aerial roots to cling to trellises, moss poles, or garden trees. Mature vines produce delicate, trumpet-shaped, pale greenish-yellow blossoms that, when hand-pollinated, develop into long, slender green pods that cure into fragrant, rich dark-brown vanilla beans. Our young plants are well-established in 1-gallon nursery containers with healthy root systems, staked and ready to climb in a warm, humid garden spot, shaded patio, or bright greenhouse.

Features

– True culinary vanilla: The authentic orchid species used to harvest gourmet vanilla pods.
– Lush vining foliage: Attractive, succulent deep-green leaves and climbing stems.
– Container size: 1 Gallon.
– Easy to train: Ideal for moss poles, trellises, pergolas, or growing up shaded garden trees.

How to Care & Grow

1. Sunlight: Thrives in bright, filtered light or dappled shade. Protect from harsh, direct midday sun which can scorch the fleshy leaves.
2. Soil & Planting: Plant in a loose, airy, fast-draining potting mix rich in organic matter—such as a blend of orchid bark, coco coir, perlite, and rich compost.
3. Watering & Humidity: Keep the growing medium lightly moist during warm active growth, allowing the top inch to dry slightly between waterings. Loves warm temperatures and high humidity (USDA Zones 10–11, or grown in containers indoors/greenhouse).
4. Support & Pollination: Provide a sturdy totem, moss pole, or trellis for the aerial roots to attach. Once the vine matures and blooms, flowers open for a single morning and require simple hand-pollination to set vanilla beans.
