Add a powerhouse of nutrition and sustainability to your home garden with our live Pigeon Pea plant (Cajanus cajan), famously known as Gandules or Guandú. Essential in Caribbean, Latin American, South Asian, and African cuisines—starring in classic dishes like arroz con gandules—pigeon peas offer delicious, nutty, protein-packed green seeds and pods.

Beyond its abundant food production, this robust, woody shrub acts as a natural soil builder. As a nitrogen-fixing legume, it enriches depleted garden soil naturally while providing deep roots that break up compaction and improve water infiltration. Well-established in 1-gallon nursery containers with strong root systems, our young plants are ready to take off once planted in the ground or transferred to a large container.

Features

– Nutritious culinary harvest: Produces delicious, protein- and fiber-rich pods prized in traditional ethnic and gourmet recipes.
– Soil improver: Naturally fixes atmospheric nitrogen, enriching your garden beds and reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.
– Container size: 1 Gallon.
– Tough & resilient: Highly drought-tolerant and fast-growing once established in the landscape.

How to Care & Grow

1. Sunlight: Plant in full sun (at least 6 to 8 hours of direct daily sunlight) for optimal flowering and heavy pod production.
2. Soil & Planting: Thrives in a wide range of well-draining soils, from sandy loam to clay, with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (6.0–7.5). Space plants 3 to 4 feet apart if creating a productive hedge.
3. Watering: Water regularly during the first few months to establish a deep root system. Once established, pigeon peas are remarkably drought-tolerant, though occasional watering increases yields.
4. Climate & Lifespan: Best adapted to tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate climates (USDA Zones 9–11). Grown as a perennial bush that can reach 6 to 10 feet tall, or pruned back easily to maintain a compact size.
