Bring the unmistakable aroma and bold, zesty flavor of authentic tropical citrus to your garden or patio with our live Thorny Key Lime tree (Citrus × aurantiifolia). Known throughout the Americas as the traditional Mexican lime, West Indian lime, or Peruvian “limón sutil,” this classic heirloom variety is favored over standard commercial limes for its higher acidity, complex floral bouquet, and rich essential oils in the rind.

The tree features dense, twiggy branches with natural small thorns, fragrant white-and-purple-tinged blossoms, and aromatic evergreen foliage. Its golf-ball-sized fruits turn from glossy dark green to pale greenish-yellow when fully tree-ripened, yielding an abundance of tangy juice. Well-established in 1-gallon nursery containers with healthy root systems, our young trees are self-fertile, fast-fruiting, and compact enough to thrive in garden beds or large patio pots.

Features

– Authentic culinary lime: The true heirloom variety required for classic Key Lime Pie, authentic ceviches, marinades, and premium cocktails.
– Intensely aromatic & juicy: Thin, smooth rinds packed with floral citrus oils and bright, high-acid juice.
– Container size: 1 Gallon.
– Prolific & self-fertile: Often blooms and fruits year-round in warm, sunny climates with just a single tree.

How to Care & Grow

1. Sunlight: Thrives in full sun (at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily) for maximum flowering and year-round fruit production.
2. Soil & Planting: Plant in loose, fertile, fast-draining citrus or sandy loam soil. Ensure pots have ample drainage holes so roots never sit in standing water.
3. Watering: Water deeply when the top 2 to 3 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Maintain even moisture during flowering and fruit set.
4. Climate & Protection: Best suited for warm, frost-free climates (USDA Zones 9b–11). Because Key Limes are sensitive to cold, container-grown trees in cooler zones should be brought indoors to a bright, sunny window before temperatures drop below 40°F.
