Mamey Sapote: Rich, Sweet & Full of Flavor

Care Tips, Recipes & More from Inca Plant Nursery

Mamey sapote is one of the most beloved tropical fruits in Latin America—and for good reason. With creamy orange flesh and a rich, custard-like flavor, mamey is both nutritious and delicious. At Inca Plant Nursery, we grow two exceptional varieties: Magaña and Key West.

Meet the Varieties

Mamey Magaña

  • Large, oval fruits (2–5 lbs)
  • Smooth texture, bright orange pulp
  • Sweet, creamy flavor perfect for drinks and desserts
  • Ripens: Early to mid-season
  • Tree Size: Large and productive

Mamey Key West

  • Rounder, smaller fruits
  • Slightly denser flesh with a nutty sweetness
  • Ripens: Later season
  • Tree Size: Medium to large

Both varieties are excellent choices for home gardeners and fruit lovers alike.

How to Grow Mamey Sapote

Mamey trees are tropical evergreens that can thrive in Florida’s climate, especially in USDA zones 10–11 (and protected areas of 9b).

Light

  • Full sun is essential for fruiting and healthy growth

Watering

  • Water regularly during dry months, especially in the first few years
  • Allow soil to drain well; avoid waterlogging

Soil

  • Prefers well-drained, loamy soil with good organic content
  • Tolerates slightly acidic to neutral pH

Fertilizer

  • Feed with a balanced fertilizer (8-3-9 or similar) 3–4 times a year
  • Add compost or organic mulch around the base

Pruning

  • Prune to shape when young
  • Remove any weak or crossing branches

Time to Fruit

  • Grafted trees may bear fruit in 3–5 years
  • Seedling trees take longer (6–8+ years)
