Caimito Star Apple: Expert Tips to Grow

Care Tips, Recipes & More from Inca Plant Nursery

If you’re looking for a tropical fruit tree that’s both beautiful and delicious, look no further than Caimito, also known as Star Apple. Available in green and purple varieties, this fruit is prized for its creamy texture, sweet flavor, and stunning appearance.

What Is Caimito?

Caimito (Chrysophyllum cainito) is a tropical fruit native to the Caribbean and Central America. The fruit is round with glossy skin—either deep purple or light green—revealing a soft, jelly-like pulp inside with a star-shaped pattern when cut crosswise.

  • Green Caimito: Milder, milkier flavor; white flesh
  • Purple Caimito: Richer, sweeter taste; purple-streaked flesh

Both are refreshing, hydrating, and rich in antioxidants and fiber.

How to Grow Caimito

Whether green or purple, caimito trees thrive in warm climates and make a gorgeous addition to any tropical or subtropical garden.

Sunlight

  • Full sun for best fruit production and healthy growth

Climate

  • Ideal for USDA zones 10–11, but can survive in 9b with protection from cold snaps

Watering

  • Water regularly, especially when young. Keep soil moist but well-drained.

Soil

  • Prefers rich, loamy, and well-drained soil
  • Add compost or organic matter to improve fertility

Pollination

  • Trees are usually self-fertile, but having more than one can increase yields

Pruning

  • Light pruning to remove dead branches and shape the canopy

Fertilizing

  • Feed with a balanced fertilizer 3–4 times a year during the growing season

How to Eat Caimito

To enjoy caimito, simply cut the fruit in half and scoop out the flesh with a spoon. Avoid the skin and seeds.

Note: Don’t eat the skin or rind, as it contains latex and can be astringent.
