Recipes, Care Tips & More from Inca Plant Nursery
If you’ve ever dreamed of a fruit that tastes like dessert straight from nature, black sapote (Diospyros digyna) is your answer. Often called the “chocolate pudding fruit,” this tropical gem surprises with rich, dark flesh that resembles creamy cocoa mousse—without the guilt!
What Is Black Sapote?
Native to Mexico and Central America, black sapote is a type of persimmon known for its smooth, custard-like texture. The fruit starts out green and firm, ripening to an olive-brown color when soft and ready to eat.
What Does It Taste Like?
When perfectly ripe, the inside of black sapote is a luscious dark brown. Its flavor is mild, sweet, and earthy—often compared to chocolate pudding, mashed dates, or a subtle mocha custard. It’s not overly sugary, which makes it perfect for smoothies, baking, or just spooning straight from the skin.
