Yerba Mate is a broadleaf evergreen holly shrub native to the subtropical regions of South America, where it has been revered for over 500 years as the source of the legendary energizing ceremonial beverage mate—the national drink of Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. This culturally significant plant produces glossy, serrated leaves naturally rich in caffeine, theobromine, antioxidants, vitamins (A, B, B1, B2, C), and essential minerals, making it far more nutrient-dense than conventional tea. The plant’s delicate white flowers attract pollinators and add ornamental value. Traditionally, dried yerba mate leaves are steeped in hot (not boiling) water and sipped through a metal filter straw called a bombilla from a shared ceremonial gourd—a ritual symbolizing hospitality, friendship, and community. Today, yerba mate is gaining global popularity as health-conscious consumers seek natural energy and wellness solutions. Whether enjoyed as traditional mate, cold tereré, or modern ready-to-drink beverages, this remarkable plant offers both cultural heritage and contemporary nutrition.

Growing Info

  • Soil: Well-drained, acidic soil with pH 5.0-6.5; rich in organic matter; amend with compost or peat moss; avoid heavy clay and waterlogging

  • Watering: Consistent moisture essential; water when top inch of soil dries; avoid overwatering and standing water which causes root rot

  • Mature Size: 10-30 feet tall (50 feet maximum in ideal conditions); 6-10 foot spread; easily maintained smaller in containers
